Running Shoe Technology May Not Have A Big Impact On Reducing Running Risk Injuries
A new study, “Influence of midsole hardness of standard cushioned shoes on running-related injury risk“, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, showed little evidence that running shoe technology have in reducing running risk injuries
The researchers monitored 247 runners wearing trainers from “a renowned sports equipment manufacturer,” with varying midsole stiffness. After five months, it turns out that runners wearing heavily cushioned shoes picked up just as many injuries as those wearing stiffer ones. For heavier runners, there wasn’t any evidence that softer shoes helped them either. This is significant development, given running shoe technology usually targets heavier runners for extra cushioning.
It is always prudent not to expect one bit of running shoe technology to solve your running injuries. As we have mentioned in the past, we need to target the entire system. This involves running, bio-mechanically correcting your running gaits, supporting muscles and control, training techniques and training volume.
As often the case, one bad apple can spoil the whole barrel. However, one good apple is not going to miraculously improve a barrel of bad ones. Take a holistic view of your entire running activity and feel better for it.
